Bobbing for Apples
Get a large, deep, leak-proof container. A half-barrel or old-fashioned wash-tub is traditional, but a big clear-plastic storage container or a toddler-sized plastic paddling pool will work. Fill the thing with water and float some apples in it. The participants should lean over the tub with their hands behind their backs and try to pick up an apple using their teeth. (This is easiest with long-stemmed apples!)

  • If the container is big enough for all the participants to fit around at once, then the winner can be the first person who picks up an apple and deposits it outside of the tub.
  • If the container is small, or the party is large, people should take turns bobbing. The one who gets the biggest apple wins.
  • If the game proves particularly challenging, you might wish to say that everyone who manages to get an apple out of the water without using their hands wins a prize.

People will be tempted to use their hands. Announce ahead of time that those who touch the apple with anything but their mouth will be disqualified. Keep an eye on them. If you do have to disqualify someone, make them the official tattle-tale.

Note: Play outdoors if the weather is mild. If you play indoors do so on a floor that is resistant to water and easily mopped up. If you don't want Halloween make-up on your good bath towels, have some disposable dishcloths on hand that people can use to dry their faces.
